The First Family of BBQ

The First Family of BBQ

The Bessingers are South Carolina’s first family of barbecue, known for their legendary mustard-based sauce — a Carolina classic since the 1930s. Today, Tommy and Michael Bessinger, along with Michael’s wife and children, continue the legacy with a hands-on approach that keeps the restaurant warm, welcoming, and true to its family roots.

Now this is what I was expecting when I saw this place. Real BBQ!!! Ribs fell off the bone, wings were amazing!!! Potato salad was perfect and the collard greens were so beautifully spiced, I couldn’t get enough of them!!! The spicy mustard sauce was the BEST!!! Will be back here again when I’m in town!!!”—Tiffani C.

Now the Owner Operator of Bessinger’s Barbeque, Tommy balances his passion for BBQ with hobbies like skiing, golf, and time on the water. He lives in West Ashley and is a proud father of Rian and Drew—who now helps manage the restaurant, continuing the family tradition.

Michael enjoys fishing, hunting, golfing, and trail riding. He and his wife, Faith, are active in their church and live in West Ashley with their three children.
